Vegetation of Middle Asia – the project state of art after ten years of survey and future perspectives
2017
Middle Asia is one of the most diverse regions on earth with high endemism of vascular plants and remarkable habitat richness, mainly due to the considerable altitudinal range (300-7,500 m a.s.l.). The region is considered as one of the 34 global biodiversity hotspots. This paper presents the Vegetation of Middle Asia database (VMA; GIVD ID: AS-00-003; http://www.givd.info/ID/AS-00-003) which is the regional database that covers the area of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The database contains phytosociological relevés collected between the years 2006 and 2016 in different vegetation types with the use of the Braun-Blanquet method. The covered vegetation types include: deciduous fore…
The Current State of Knowledge on the Clinical and Methodological Aspects of Extracorporeal Shock Waves Therapy in the Management of Post-Stroke Spas…
2021
In many patients after stroke, spasticity develops over time, resulting in a decrease in the patient’s independence, pain, worsening mood, and, consequently, lower quality of life. In the last ten years, a rich arsenal of physical agents to reduce muscle tone such as extracorporeal shock therapy (ESWT) wave has come through. The aim of this narrative review article is to present the current state of knowledge on the use of ESWT as a supplement to the comprehensive rehabilitation of people after stroke suffering from spasticity. The PubMed and PEDro databases were searched for papers published in English from January 2000 to December 2020, 22 of which met inclusion criteria for clinical stud…
Bacterial metal nanoparticles to develop new weapons against bacterial biofilms and infections
2021
The widespread use of antibiotics has resulted in the outbreak and spread of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Bacterial antibiotic resistance may develop at cellular and community levels. In the latter case, it is based on tolerance which implicates the shift from a free-living form of life (i.e., planktonic) to a sessile multi-stratified community (i.e., biofilm). Metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have been shown to be promising candidates as antimicrobial agents. MNPs are able to interact with and penetrate bacterial biofilms, thus, resulting effective antibiofilm compounds. Another interesting aspect is the possibility of using plants, fungi, yeasts, and bacteria to obtain biogenic MNPs (BMNP). …
The Impact of Family and Work-Life Balance Policies on the Performance of Spanish Listed Companies
2014
Work-life balance has become a topic of great relevance in today's business world. In this work we present both a theoretical review on the state of art in this issue and an analysis testing the validity of the positive impact of work-life balance policies in firm performance. For the empirical analyses of these policies on performance we evaluated a sample composed of firms listed in IBEX-35. Findings provide support for the idea that introducing work-life balance practices benefits the company with respect to talent retention and higher employee engagement, as well as achieving a positive impact on productivity, costs and business results.
Breast dynamic contrast-enhanced-magnetic resonance imaging and radiomics: State of art
2020
Breast cancer represents the most common malignancy in women, being one of the most frequent cause of cancer-related mortality. Ultrasound, mammography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) play a pivotal role in the diagnosis of breast lesions, with different levels of accuracy. Particularly, dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI has shown high diagnostic value in detecting multifocal, multicentric, or contralateral breast cancers. Radiomics is emerging as a promising tool for quantitative tumor evaluation, allowing the extraction of additional quantitative data from radiological imaging acquired with different modalities. Radiomics analysis may provide novel information through the quantification…
Induction Heating Technology and Its Applications: Past Developments, Current Technology, and Future Challenges
2013
International audience; Induction heating technology is nowadays the heating technology of choice in many industrial, domestic, and medical applications due to its advantages regarding efficiency, fast heating, safety, cleanness, and accurate control. Advances in key technologies, i.e. power electronics, control techniques, and magnetic component design, have allowed the development of highly reliable and cost-effective systems, making this technology readily available and ubiquitous. This papers reviews induction heating technology summarizing the main milestones in its development, and analyzing the current state-of-art of induction heating systems in industrial, domestic and medical appl…
A Review of the Water Desalination Technologies
2021
Desalination is commonly adopted nowadays to overcome the freshwater scarcity in some areas of the world if brackish water or salt water is available. Different kinds of technologies have been proposed in the last century. In this paper, the state of the mainstream solutions is reported, showing the current commercial technologies like reverse osmosis (RO), Multi-Stages Flash desalination (MSF) and Multi-Effect Distillation (MED), and the new frontiers of the research with the aim of exploiting renewable sources such as wind, solar and biomass energy. In these cases, seawater treatment plants are the same as traditional ones, with the only difference being that they use a renewable energy s…
Polymeric carbon nitride (C3N4) as heterogeneous photocatalyst for selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes
2018
Abstract Polymeric carbon nitride (C3N4) is a semiconductor material which is a very promising green photocatalyst with good physico-chemical properties and stability. It is a metal-free carbon based non-toxic material which can be easily obtained from earth-abundant components. The robustness and versatility of C3N4 as a photo-redox catalyst allows its use for selective oxidations by heterogeneous photocatalysis. This paper reviews the state of art in the application of C3N4 as heterogeneous photocatalyst for selective oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes.
A state of art on plastics in the oceans: Observation and Mitigation Methods
2019
Marine wildlife faces a growing number of threats across the globe, and the survival of many species and populations will be dependent on conservation action. The aim of this paper is a presentation of mitigation methods overview about plastics in the ocean, in fact plastic pollution is increasing and in order to mitigate this problem, technology might give the solution
